Voice Mail - Frequently Asked Questions

How is Voice Mail better than an answering machine?

Unlike an answering machine, Voice Mail takes messages when you are on the phone, online, choose not to answer the call waiting beep, or when the power goes out.

How do I know if I have a new message in my mailbox?

There are three ways in which you can be notified of a new voice mail message:

  • Email Notification.  With Enhanced Voice Mail, you will receive an email notification for any new messages.  Messages can also be played on your PC.  (note: email notification is not available with the Basic Voice Mail package).

  • Audible Notification.  When you pick up your phone, you will hear a distinctive (rapid) dial tone if you have any new messages (also known as stutter dial tone).  Note: Audible notification is only available with TelNet T1-based products.

  • Visual Notification.  Some telephones have a "message waiting" indicator (i.e., flashing light).  Note:  Visual notification is only available with TelNet T1-based products).

If you do not have any of the above options, use caller ID to see if any calls were received and then periodically dial your local access number to check for new messages.

How do I access my messages while at home?

  • Dial your home phone number and press * at any time during your greeting.
  • Or dial your local access number, enter your home telephone number, beginning with your area code, and press #.
  • Note:  If speed dial is enabled on your phone, you can access voice mail by dialing a single digit on your keypad.  Click here for speed dial setup instructions
  • Note: Usage charges will apply if you have measured service.  Make sure to use the appropriate seven digit local access number to avoid toll or long distance charges.

How do I access my messages if I'm away from home?

  • Dial your home phone number and press * at any time during your greeting. Local usage charges will apply if you have measured service.
  • Or dial your access number, enter your home telephone number, beginning with your area code, and press #.

Am I charged to access my voice mail from home?

If you have measured service, you will be charged the cost of a local call when accessing your voice mail.  Make sure to use the appropriate seven digit local access number to avoid toll or long distance charges.

Am I charged to access my voice mail from a remote location?

If you call your voice mail access number, you will not incur a charge on your home phone bill when calling from a remote location (the number you called from would be billed based on the call type and service plan setup for that number).  However, if you dial your home phone number and it forwards to your voice mail, then you would incur usage charges if you have measured service.  Additionally, if you are calling from a cellular phone, cellular charges may apply.  Contact your cellular provider for details.

What if I forgot my password?

For your safety and privacy, we do not maintain your password, but we will reset it for you.  To reset your password, contact TelNet at customersupport@telnetww.com Password resets are performed during standard business hours of 7:00 am to 7:00 pm EST.

How do I change the number of rings before Voice Mail answers?

Is Voice Mail compatible with other calling services?

How do I change my greeting?

How is Basic Voice Mail different from Enhanced Voice Mail?

Basic Voice Mail is a simplified voice mail product, providing the most common capabilities to record/retrieve messages, customize greetings, etc.  It supports up to 20 total messages.

Enhanced Voice Mail provides the same capabilities, plus additional messaging, notification and sub mailbox options.  It supports up to 50 messages.  Click here for a complete feature list and package comparison.

What will the email notification look like when I get a message?

The email will be sent from "Message_Center".  An example subject line is:  "Message From 5556667777 7778889999 Voice New 8 Saved 26".  This includes the phone number it was sent from, the number it was sent to and the total of new and saved messages.  Subscribers should be made aware of this message format so they do not think it is unsolicited email, spam or a virus.  Note that email notification is only available with the Enhanced Voice Mail package.
